If you are like me and cover your dummy cakes with plastic wrap before using, you would want to put a thin layer of buttercream on to smooth out any of the wrinkles caused by the plastic wrap. If not your fondant will be lumpy and wavy. Fondant picks up all the imperfections underneath.
