Has anyone ever made a purse cake without covering it in fondant? I'm doing a black and white cake (zebra stripes) with a red flower. I'm sure i can do the zebra stripes in fondant on the smooth buttercream, but how do you think that will look, since the flap on the purse would be black fondant?
I have never made a purse cake.. but I have done a fondant zebra cake, and I usually work with buttercream and use fondant details - I think it makes it looks more cleaner to use fondant for certain decorations! I think your cake purse will look just fine! I found this link the other day - it will help make your buttercream so smooth - and you can lay your stripes over top.. flawless! lol

The purse cake that I did was white buttercream with black fondant accents. It's in my pics....check it out. I think it looks fine and it tastes much better!
