Need Ideas For Garnishing A Spice Cake W/caramel Buttercream

Anyone have any suggestions for decor/garnish for a simple spice cake with caramel buttercream? There aren't any nuts, raisins, or anything in the cake. It's a very small, simple cake so I don't need much, but so far all I have is a border.
It's for a birthday, but they don't want any message or anything on the cake. Just small and simple.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Maybe a burnt sugar type thing? Cook sugar until it starts to caramelize. Then pour it out onto a greased cookie sheet or foil. Cool and break into shards or crumbs as a garnish. Not too much and it is a tasty pretty garnish.
Similarly, how about drizzled caramel?
