I made my first 'decorated' cake about 15 years ago. I saw a pic in a music magazine where someone had made a cake for 'KISS' the rock group. It looked like a stack of 'presents'. I was so awe struck with that idea that I was obsessed to learn to make it. SO that was my son's birthday cake, that for the first time wasn't 'ordered' from a store bakery. I had found my new hobby! I never knew I had it in me. Granted, that cake wasn't as neat and clean as the pic in the mag...but I was happy with it and I never knew I had it in me! I love decorating cakes and am still learning things about it to this day...but I have taken on a lot of fun challenges over the years. 
i've made my kids bday cakes for the past 3 years, but just recently started making caked for other people...mostly friends and family. My dream is to have my own business someday. i still have a lot to learn, i know. i really really enjoy decorating though. 
I can remember doing cakes for my nieces/nephews when they were really young...so at least 15 years, maybe a little longer. I remember the first cake I ever decorated was for church - we were having a valentines dinner and the sunday school/youth groups could submit a cake for a contest. A friend of mine & I made ours - her mom dabbled in decorating and had tips/bags/pans etc. for us to use. I *think* we won, but couldn't swear to it.
about 30 years...I started when I was about 8 years old helping my mom. She always did all the family cakes and stuff. I just fell in love with decorating
I only started decorating about a year ago. I lost my office job that I had for almost 14 years and had no idea what to do with myself. I decided to try the Wilton classes and I was hooked!!
Shelbymama--me too!! Well, I have been decorating for about 6 years, but it wasn't until I lost my office job of 7 years last summer that I really had the time to dedicate to decorating. Prior to that, I really only made about two cakes a year. I have made more cakes this year than I have made in the previous years combined!!
Well, consistently I have been decorating for 3 years. But, about 8 years ago, I started making cakes only 2-3 times a year and slowly built up my skills. But, since I started decorating cakes for family approximately 3 years ago, my skills have improved a bunch!!
