What can I do to prevent silk ribbon from absorbing grease when placed around a buttercream iced cake.

You can cut a strip of wax paper the width and lenght that you need and place on cake where you want the ribbon to go; attach with a dot of bc, royal icing or melted candy melts. Place ribbon over wax paper and attach.
