How Do I Make A High Heel Cake?

I have to make a stiletto for a birthday party to feed 40 people. I am not using fondant for this. I was going to use buttercream or if anyone knows of anything please feel free to advise. 
my question is can I make a layer cake out of a shoe or would it be easier to make a square cake and the shoe out of gumpaste?
You could make a shoebox cake covered in buttercream and the shoe in gumpaste. I know some buttercream gods (goddesses?) could pull off a great looking buttercream shoe, but I know I personally have an easier time to do detailed work with fondant rather than buttercream, so that's just how I would tackle it.
