First Time Cake Stacking - Is There A Thread?

Ok I spent several hours last night trying to find a thread on how to stack my first tiered cake. 
Just trying to understand the basics.
I got bubble tea straws and a small cake board for my 2nd tier. It is cardboard, do I need foamcore? What stops the 2nd tier from sliding off? If you put a dowel through both cakes how does it go through the board under the top tier.
I am sure all of these answers are out there on CC but if someone has the link to a good thread I would really appreciate it.
