I am trying to use an impression mat on my fondant. I rolled out the fondant and I was able to get the design in nice and even. Unfortunately, when I put it on the cake the sides became completely distorted. There's no real way to repair it to look right. Did I do something wrong? Should I put the fondant on the cake and then imprint it? ugh!
If you roll the fondant a bit thicker than normal and then use the mat, the design will hold up better.
Let the fondant site for a few minutes before applying it to the cake. It won't stretch as badly.
Pat the fondant onto the cake using a soft sponge--like the pink one in the Wilton gum paste flower kits or a cheap, lightweight, non-patterned small cell kitchen sponge.
