Flawless Fondant Turned Not So Flawless. What Went Wrong?

Silly question...are you supposed to "wet" the crusted buttercream in order for the fondant to adhere?
Sort of.
I use a pastry brush and simple syrup (equal amounts of water/sugar). After my icing has crusted I brush the simple syrup on my cake and then cover with fondant. I also use the same method for cakes covered with ganache. Like I said in a previous post, Planet Cake's "How to cover a cake with fondant" video on youtube is how I learned this method.
