Can anyone help me with a general price range for all cakes and wedding cakes for central Iowa?? Thanks for any help I get!!
I do an annual pricing comparison for central Iowa. I use prices posted on websites of 12 businesses in the Des Moines vicinity. The list includes storefronts as well as home bakeries. Here's a summary of my comparison this year. These numbers are base prices per serving:
Buttercream $1.98 - $3.75
Fondant $2.98 - $4.50
3D sculpted $3.50; $40 - $100 minimum
Sheet cakes $0.32 - $1.37
Unfilled Cupcakes $1.25 - $3.00
Filled Cupcakes $2.00 - $3.00
Delivery in DSM Metro $0.00 - $50.00
Delivery outside DSM $0.40 - $1.00 per mile round trip
Some other interesting tidbits:
There are two shops that do not do fondant or 3D cakes at all.
Three charge $0.25++ additional per serving for fillings other than buttercream and/or premium flavors

queenofsweets that is some good info. I am over by the quad-cities, but it still amazes me that people (non grocery stores) can still charge only $0.32/serving for sheet cakes. This just helps confirm my choice of not offering them, i just can't compete.
