So Far, So Good ... (Dragon Update Pics)
Decorating By emiyeric Updated 24 May 2010 , 2:15pm by DLo912
So now that I've learned how to post pics on the forums (about stinkin' time!
), I figured I'd post an update on my dragon cake I was asking for advice on the other day. Still rough and lacking detail, but here are the six dragons as far as I have them for now. I'll work on the gelatin wings tomorrow, and I'll probably paint them Friday ... assemble the cake/mountain tomorrow, too. What I wouldn't give for an airbrush about now!!!
Very nice sculpting. I picked up a super cheap airbrush on e-bay.
awsome work, keep us posted on final product
Great job! You ARE an artist. Please keep us in the loop. This is fascinating.
Thanks, guys! I spent the better part of the day playing with gelatin to make the wings ... WOW, so much fun!!!! I have a bajillion ideas for how to make some more details on the dragons with gelatin, but I'm not sure if that's actually going to be a possibility or not ... we'll see how much time I have (I'm supposed to be at my son's Career Day all day tomorrow, so that's a whole day's work I'm going to have to do between tonight and tomorrow night
).
So right now I'm production-lining it and doing all the yellow on all the dragons, since they all have little details in yellow ... I'll do more individualized painting later tonight, but I got the cakeboard and the wings done, and I think the yellow is as far as I can get with my younger kiddos getting home any minute
.
Thanks again for the encouragement! I just hope Ihave time to do everything I want to do!
Took this pic last night just before turning in. Still need to do a lot of the detail work on the dragons (including wings for two of them and painting the one), and I need to paint my mountain, teeth and nails for the dragons, but it gets the idea across
. I'll be finishing it today during the kids' naptime ...
Thanks, guys
... Jo, I followed Loucinda's directions for the wings. There's an article on CC about it, and a link to a thread in the responses to that article that Loucinda posted. Bascially, you take 1 part gelatin and 2.5 parts water and warm them up, then skim off the "scum" once it rests, then tint it and rewarm, and paint it onto a mold or imprint sheet (I had neither, so freehanded them onto my silicone mat). I laid my thin wires into them, making frames for some of them by tying the wires how I wanted, and then just let them dry for about 24 hours, till they sprang off the mat all on their own. It's amazing how they kind of came to life all on their own, taking a weird stwisty shape as they dried! ![]()
HTH.
All4cake, you're so sweet! Thanks for all your encouragement ... final product is at http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1682314
