I made a mickey cake...and stuck fondant ears with toothpicks on the cake..and they wouldnt hold...they kept tearing the fondant...
The ears were made out of very light cardboard covered in fondant and the stuck on a cake covered in fondant made out of the half ball pan....
what cud i have done to prevented this?
You needed to use something more substantial than toothpicks. A thicker dowel would work better....there was too much weight for the toothpicks to hold it.
If the ball pan sat on another cake, I would even made the dowel long enough to go through the base cake too.
Maybe next time you could try inserting them into a coffee straw (the way floral wires are inserted into straws so they don't touch the cake). Filling the straw with fondant or chocolate helps hold the wire in place....maybe that will also work with toothpicks?
Just a theory ![]()
