Butavan is an emulsion added to cakes and fillings the same way you would add vanilla. It has a nice butter/vanilla flavor which is not overpowering. HTH

FYI the company that made butavan has gone out of business. Earlene is now selling a replacement that is actually very good. you use in in conjunction with or in place of a vanilla or butter.
It is a flavoring not a filling.
