I have tried putting a ribbon on several cakes. I have seen it done here and love the look. I am having trouble finding a ribbon that won't soak up the grease of buttercream. I tried wax paper between but that just looked thick and not smooth. I used a ribbon for a cake at a shower that I attended so I was able to place the ribbon at the last minute then remove before cutting so it didn't have time to soak up grease. But now I have an order for the same cake but she needs it a day ahead, what to do? What are your tricks with ribbons? do you use a certain type of ribbon? if so what type and where did you get it? thanks for sharing your secrets

I use contact paper and put it on the back of the ribbon. That way it sticks to the ribbon and holds off the grease. All you do is fit a long strip of contact paper to the ribbon and then attach it.

You can also use scotch tape or clear packing tape to line the back of the ribbon.

I know one decorator who rubs down the ribbon with Crisco so it doesn't have grease spots. This could change the color of your ribbon, tho.

Thanks for the good ideas. Do you think the customer will ask about the contact paper or tape touching her food though? Have you had a customer question it? what do you say?

thanks for asking this question and THANKS for the answers!!!!!

One more question: after putting the contact paper onto the ribbon, would you still secure the ribbon to the cake with icing? the contact paper side will stick to the buttercream cake?

I use any type of ribbon that is pretty. Before I put it on the cake, I use crisco and rub both sides of the ribbon. The crisco greases it up uniformly so you can't really get grease spots. thumbs_up.gif Works like a charm.

I'd worry more about ribbon touching the food. Textile factories are not known for their sanitary conditions.
