Cricut Settings For Gumpaste

costumeczar: We run ours on a 20qt mixer, which of course even with a dough hook whips a lot of air into the mix. We usually roll the entire batch down to about 0.7mm, fold it over on itself and then repeat the process a few times. This gets the air out and makes it a lot less spongy. Have to say I never even considered hand-mixing.

When it's first done it has the consistency of a dough more than that of GP. Once its been wrapped for about 24 hours it has more the consistency of a large rock. That is when we start working it and getting the air out. We usually even let it sit out for a few minutes between the rolling and folding process to let some of the stickiness dissipate.

We currently make out own gumpaste in 6x batches of the recipe posted on our site. We have had good results running some of the commercial gumpaste varieties on the Cricut Cake. Of course costumeczar is correct that frosting sheets run like a charm as well. My latest favorite is using about 80% satin ice and 20% of our gumpaste.

That's how I handle mine, too. I can send you my recipe to try some if you'd be interested in that. Like I said, though, it's basically a homemade fondant with tylose in it, minus the shortening. I mix it by hand, not in a mixer, then knead shortening into it instad of using cornstarch or powdered sugar when I'm ready to work with it.

I tried gumpaste today that I rolled out last night and let sit ready to go for the cricut today STILL jagged edges BAD. Then I tried the white that I hadn't used gel in and it still made jagged edges. I will post pic tomorrow, I HAVE to get this to work. I can't afford the 14.00 for 3 sheets that's coming with the cake cricut. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

You have to roll it out REALLY thin, and let it dry a lot longer than you think. I let mine dry for over an hour before it was cutting the best when I did it yesterday. Read my blog, I have a few entries on it about this. Tobias and Jennifer have a lot of information on their site, too. Personally, I don't think the Cricut will be something that people use all the time. Maybe once in a while after the first thrill is gone! (Think they'll hire me to be their spokesperson? Hahaha!)

Your funny................Some people sure do make it look easy. I'm glad I bought mine for scrapbooking and was trying it for gumpaste BEFORE I bought the cake cricut.

I made mine two days before rolled it to a 6 it was THIN and left it sit out for 15 min before I tried to cut the black after it sat cut and ready to go all night in a baggie.. I thought ok maybe it's cause I added the gel color and it messed with the texture so I did the same with the plain white gumpaste and the same thing happened I'm trying to add a picture here for you all to see. How do I get to everyones blogs? Thanks for any help. I want to win at this.

I think the only reason I'm still messing with it is that I want to win at it too! My blog is listed at the bottom in my signature lines. Look up Tobias's website/blog in his profile, if I remember correctly.

To me it looks like your gumpaste was too wet, still. Let it sit out uncovered untiul the surface is totally dry to the touch, then try it. I also found that a longer blade setting and the minimum speed and pressure worked better for me than using a higher pressure. Do you have the deep cut blade or are you using the regular one? The deep cut works better, but not by much!

Debster.... I think your icing may still be a little thick. I'll tell Tobias to look at it to make sure. Machines can roll out differently at the same number. Can you take a ruler and measure in mm?

debster: First things first - are you sure the blade is not clogged or gunked up? Can you take it out and make sure rotates freely?
