For a bachelor party this weekend, my friends have asked me to do a cake like this:

(It's a Starcraft Protoss probe, if anyone is familar with it)
They said it would be fine to do a top down, 2d version, but I feel like it would come out looking funny like that. So I'd really like to do a 3d model of it, but am not sure how to approach it. The main body would just be a 9 inch round, which is easy. But for all the little 'arms'... could I just cut them out of fondant ahead of time, then attach with toothpicks to the body? Any better ideas?
A big thanks!!
much better picture (looks to be a cardboard model)

so....
main body cake on a board - use a wood one so you can easily...
attach dowels for all the leg parts
then cover dowel in RKT and then on to the fondant or BC
