You should try sugarveil; it's a bit of an investment, but well worth it and easy to work with! 
Since I'm running out of time and probably can't do mail order w/o paying a lot for shipping, I was thinking more of a drawing that I could trace onto the cake (well maybe trace onto wax paper first and then use a pin to transfer the pattern to the cake??). I will definitely check out sugarveil and global for the future.
