I'm making a valentines cake for a co-worker's son. I need some ideas for decorations. It'll be a heart shaped lemon cake with buttercream . I don't want it to look to too "girlie". Does anyone have any suggestions to make it more "masculine" but still keep in the spirit of the holiday?

Could you do a tuxedo like those heart boxes with candy in them, or is that too formal?

Maybe you could do something white on white? I have a cake in my photos that's white on white - I listed it under Valentine's Day just because I didn't know what else to list it under. Maybe you could do something like that and decorate it with fruit or something?

By the way...you are in the same town as my mom! icon_smile.gif

I woud say white on white with red writing, simply saying Happy valentine's day... and then trim it out in a ribbon trim... I wouldn't think that was too girlie... the tuxedo idea is cool too.

i think the heart, regardless of color, says feminine. If they didnt specifically ask for a heart shape, i'd do a round or square, with red fondant and a white satin ribbon at the bottom edge, then dry dust with super pearl dust. simple, pretty, and keeping with the holiday.

decorating the top with clean DRY sugared fruit would be nice as well...different shades of red / purple berries, grapes etc... dip them in beaten egg white and then sugar. allow to dry. sprinkle with sparkle dust if you have it to add to the shine.

Make the heart cake and outline it with converation hearts. Every boy (man, after all they are big boys when it comes to cake) I know loves those converation hearts.

The tux idea is great, too. I have a hard time with black icing. Not eating it making it! icon_smile.gif

Have you seen this idea, it used the small pan. Very cute for valentines day, if you change your mind about a hear cake. Very cute

thanks for the ideas. he did pick out the heart shaped one, so i'll stick with that..I may do the tuxedo, thats a good one. Or i'll just do some simple scroll work or something I guess it doesnt have to be in hearts and everything. Thanks again!!

You could pile chocolate dipped strawberries on top with a few groups of them around the base.
