Question About Edible Image

If I put an edible image onto colored icing what will the image look like where there is no printing on the image. I know that I can trim the image down. The reason I am asking is because my image has words on it. I want the icing color to show thru in the opening of the letters like in the hole of an O.
With the paper I use, it will not show through. Mine will tint a little to the color icing you use behind it, but I don't think it will have the effect you are looking for.
