I use almond pound cake baked in sheet cake pan and then freeze it before cutting it into shapes. I use candy melts mixed with a little crisco, melted over stove on low heat (will burn easily, so don't use microwave) and then pour over them. They taste great but are time consuming.

I just attempted my first petit fours last week. This is the site I used to make the ones in my photos.

I FROST A SMOTH LAYER OF BC OVER THE TOP, FREEZE, THEN CUT INTO SHAPES. KEEP IN THE FREEZER UNTIL READY TO COVER, THEN HEAT UP CANNED ICING TO A POURABLY CONSISTENCY, NOT TO HOT. PUT CAKES ON COOLING GRID OVER A DRIP PAN THEN COVER WITH THE HEATED FROSTING. I USUALLY SPOON AROUND THE EDGES THEN OVER THE TOP. ALSO, I COAT TWICE. THE FROSTING SETS DRY TO THE TOUCH AS WELL IN AN HOUR OR SO
