pattycakes4...Thanks so much for your posting. It gives us a better insight as to what goes on that we do not know about. I really surprised to hear that they told you that you could not use purple!!! Especially since the bride specifically said that she wanted that color. Your cakes were so very different, it doesn't seem that it would have mattered. Your cake was very detailed and well made. Congratulations on your win.

Kricket, Thanks for asking. It is kind of hard to hear all the bad things that people have to say when they might not truly understand how it all works.
A lot of people have asked me about the bottom of our cake which is what I think made Jenna choose it. The crystal trees were all modeling chocolate with sugar crystals, and the lights shined up on the crystals. All the skyline was made from sugar, and the base was all sanding sugar. The cake was VERY sparkly and glittery and beautiful at the wedding under the tent with all the spotlights on it. I wish there was a way for people to really see the cakes how they looked in person instead of on TV, it just is so different! But, what an experience, unforgetable!!!!

Patty, I think that almost everyone didn't know you were also a member here and were rooting for Sharon since the thread was started with her name and she was an obvious CC buddy. After all, she does seem to run her mouth here on CC a bit more than you...LOL. ( icon_biggrin.gif Love you Sharon! icon_biggrin.gif) We were just cheering her on. Her cake was very beautiful too!

Please don't take any of it personally. You are our CC buddy too and we are super proud that you both got to participate. icon_biggrin.gif What an honor! You guys are so brave for taking on a challenge like that.

Now that I know those were the colors you had to make it, everything makes more sense. I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why you would choose to make it black and white when she said purple and gray. The moving parts of your cake and your interpretation of the theme are what did it for you. You did deserve your win!

Congratulations on a wonderful cake! and that NICE check too! icon_lol.gif

There is SOOOO much that goes on behind the scenes... and we're not allowed to talk about it. It's a form of reality TV, take it for what it's worth.

I watched the show tonight and I have to say, I thought the bride and judges were spot on. I LOVED Patty's cake. I think it captured what the theme was perfectly. It was very young, classy, and had a New York art scene vibe to it. I loved that there was so much black because it actually highlighted the white and made it pop. It was the most artistically stunning of the three IMHO.

I did love Sharon's cake too, but I didn't get "wedding" from it. It felt more like an anniversary cake than a wedding cake. It was a little too old-fashioned. It was a beautiful cake!! Please don't get me wrong!! But...if I was the bride, I would have picked Patty's.

Congrats to both of you! I'm amazed by both of you and your awesome talents! You are my Cakesperation! icon_biggrin.gif

1st. of all I would like to say "Congrats!" to Teambito for making such a beautiful, elegant, very neat, very clean, amazing cake. I was a Teambito Cheerleader with fondant pom poms & buttercream cheers icon_lol.gif , cheering for you all the way!

2nd. Congrats! to Pat & her team for their win, on a very beautiful cake. Thanks for sharing about the color (purple). With all the beeping and you being told not to use purple, it just proves your comment " everything is not always as it appears on camera".

As for the beeps, IMO, the editing department did overkill on the beeping and they were misleading. I mean come on Editors, what a bunch of bull(beep), waittt for itt, waittt for itt...yeap, I just got beep for bullcrap icon_lol.gif (sorry I couldn't pass that up). As I have learn watching FNCC"s, they edit alot for ratings.

To: Sharon, Pat & Jan, I thought you & your teams all did an amazing job and all of you have wonderful decorating skills! Congrats to all 3 teams for their beautiful creations and hard work thumbs_up.gif

God Bless,
Sharon

okay winners.... my hubby wanted me to ask you two a couple of questions. (yes, he watched it and really enjoyed it)

1. he wants to know what happens to the other cakes. like do you get to eat them or what...

2. he also wants to know if the cake on the show IS the cake that is delivered to the wedding (like that day or following day, or do you have to make another cake to deliver to the wedding (i think he is asking if, once you win, then you will make the same cake for the bride at a different time, or is the wedding actually planned for that day or the next)

thanks for taking the time to answer his questions icon_smile.gif

As an assistant on a couple of episodes, I can answer these questions, lol..

1. The cakes are thrown away. Even the ones delivered to the venue. Sometimes they'll take a piece out of it to serve, but for the most part, they're trashed when it's over. They can't take it to the food bank because of licensing/liability issues in CA.

2. The cake is the one delivered to the venue. Sometimes you have to fix a few things before delivering (see the horse face in the Nutcracker). We have to almost completely disassemble the cake for transportaiton then put it back together at the venue.

At the end of the episode, it states in the credits that the cake served at the event is NOT the cake that was made for the competition.

If I were the bride, I would have chosen Sharon's cake, BUT I WASN'T the bride. Sharon's cake was very clean and I loved the colors. Wow, she had to sit out TWICE! BTW, I think the sitting out part is pretty ridiculous.
The bride's face did light up when she was commenting on Pat's cake. I think that she liked that it portrayed New York better with the skyline, and had something for the groom as well. It had more of a "wow" factor and was more "ultimate". As stated before, it's a personal choice. I've watched the show on several occasions and thought someone was robbed, but I'm not the customer (or a judge).
Thanks for answering some questions regarding the show. I was wondering if the venue got the same cake. It has appeared that the cakes have been "cleaner" when they show them @ the venue. Probably just my imagination, but some have looked a little different besides the horse cake.

I loved Sharon's cake. It was perfection. I'm a littled miffed that she can spit out such a perfect cake in 8 hours!!! icon_wink.gif I liked to think that all those perfect cakes she has were from days of work not hours! LOL!Seriously though, it was perfect and I would have wanted that in my wedding. Even dh who has sat with me thru many a SugarShack dvd loved it.

However, Pat's cake did hold the WOW that they were looking for and it was definately a nice cake. Just not my cup of tea. I would choose perfect execution work of "WOW" work anyday. But that is my opinion, and those are like BEEP BEEP we all have one!!!

The episodes are filmed at a pretty quick rate, over a few months time and after being around all that cake, I think the crew is pretty sick of cake!

As mentioned above, the winning cake has to be partially disassembled prior to transporting. And the winning team is generally given time to finish and work on their cake to "clean it up." Which considering the haste during the competition, is only fair to the client.

Sharon did, in my opinion, play it "safe." also, her cake had a slowly rotating top, but I didn't notice much else that moved. THey are looking for real "wow" factors on this show, with lots of lights and movement. That's what wins this show, honestly. While they may not say it, I think they really ARE required.

And who said the bride liked the other cake better? When I watched the show, I didn't hear her say that. I think that's putting words in her mouth.

i agree.

i only watched the ending of the show but i think the other cake in question *was* too "safe". also, i wasn't too crazy about the way they broke up the tiers, just wasn't pleasing to the eye.

i think the white chocolate branches were so neat on the winning cake, congrats pat!

I LOVED Sharon's cake and I got married (and live in NYC) lol. Not every person that lives in NYC wants dramatic and lights and glamour. Some of us just want pretty.

The winning cake was great, but it isn't for me. Those little things popping out of the top hats just cracked me up- it was a circus. But the important thing is that the bride was happy.

Sharon can't wait to see you again on TV!! Go kick some Bleep. lol

Congrats Pat! Awesome cake - I really liked the concept, but not necessarily the color-just too dark - but after your post I totally understand. I think if you could have used "purple" it would have been more to my liking. But that just my opinion.

Sharon I was so rooting for you. I really liked your cake, colors and design. As for the beeping it was hilarious - but reading lips, I could tell most were not necessary. But it's TV! I was so sorry you had to sit out twice. I about fell out of my chair when you had to sit out the second time!!!! Woke my son up (fell asleep on couch) when I yelled NO Way!! LOL

It would be so neat to take aspects of each of your cakes and combined them - now that would be an Ulitmate Cake!!!

Oh I'm so glad to know Pat is a CC'er too! Hi Pat!!

I am happy to know what your trees were made out of. I kept talking out loud to my tv last night asking what they were!! And I'm so glad you clarified some things.

Not to hijack this thread but the episode I got to be on airs next week, March 15th and we had some of those same issues of having to change things last minute too. I know they won't mention that on air but it was a BIG problem at the time because ours was so similar to another team's cake that they made us change a huge element. Talk about scramble to figure out what to do ( and yes, those cuss words flew like crazy). Thankfully it was not on air though.

I wanted to add that yes, the cakes that don't win do get disassembled right there in the studio kitchens and thrown away. Pity really! So much hard work, sooooo much cake and right in the dumpster.

KimAZ
