that I will be making for my niece? They will be going on "quilted" fondant where the diamond impressions meet. They are TINY!!!

I figured we would pick them off before serving/eating OR do you think that would be too much trouble?

I think it's a bad idea. Have you tried rock sugar? Or you can cut gummy candies into little pieces. Or, if they're that tiny, what about a dot of piping gel?

I wouldn't put tiny ones on. Too much trouble and someone will eat one. For kids birthday parties, I think it's best to not have to do much work to make the cake edible. I agree with piping gel, or maybe dragees

This week someone posted a link to a bakery that puts crystals on the sides of their cake. I remember thinking "I hope their liability coverage is enough to cover the lawsuits over the broken teeth!" People are STUPID! Many of them will be eaten...and many of them will be chomped down on. It's a liability issue easily avoided. There are lots of other pretty options that won't put you in danger of being sued.

Dragees look like metallic balls, they are edible. I buy mine from http://www.pattycakes.com/ Here's the link to the dragee, sprinkle page http://shop.pattycakes.com/Cake-Decorating/items.asp?CartId={61237519-B48B-4A4A-8F1D-4FF382F4B320}&Cc=SPRI%2DSPR&Tp=

I have never paid for speedier shipping than standard and it always comes in a couple days.

People are stupid to assume that a cake is edible?

We may see it as art, but at the end of the day it's food and it needs to be edible.

People are stupid btu maybe the baker was smart. The layers of the cake with the crystals may have been fake. Who knows.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.

But no, the baker (me) wasn't very smart, I was thinking no harm in swallowing small pcs., not chomping down on one!! And definitely too much trouble removing them all. Anyway, think that I will try and find some dragees.

If you are doing the serving, then you can do it, because you will know where to look. If someone else will be serving, forget it. They will always miss one or two.

I think even if you are serving, this should be a big no... little kids are curious, and could always come up and take on while the cakes are on display. Nonetheless, there is harm in swallowing (accidentally or not) even small crystals, they are glass and lead, which is poisonous to ingest. I would strongly advise against putting these on the cake, because even if you have enough sense to not eat it, someone else will, and a small thing could lead to a big disaster.
