Pull Apart Cupcake Frosting

I want to make a pull apart cake but don't know if the frosting used over the cupcakes is regular buttercream or a smoother frosting like merengue or marshmallow?

it's regular buttercream. When I asked this another CC'er informed me to fill in the spaces between the cupcakes then ice as usual. I will try to send that post to you.

I use my regular buttercream recipe, just a tad stiffer than if I am icing a cake.
