I'm going to call ACMoore and see when the next class is, but I'm wondering what I need. I purchased the tackle box with the teal top at ACMoore (had 4 colors, tips, bags, spatula, flower nail...can't think what else). Anything else I need?

How many weeks is the class? Do you do just 1 cake per class? Or do you do one for homework and then work on one during class?

Thanks for any info. I'm getting excited! icon_biggrin.gif

I believe you are talking about the 50 piece tool box. That is fine for Course 1. It will have all of the things that is found in the course 1 Kit.

This is the shopping list I give my C1 students:
Required:
Course 1 Kit, 50 piece tool box or 101-piece toolbox
Meringue Powder
Decorating bags of choice

Recommended:
Additional couplers
Addition tips 1, 3, 16, & 104
Clown heads
Flower lifter (comes in the tool box)

Now on the first night of class your instructor will show you all kinds of Wilton tools that you may decide you want.

In Course 1 you will bring an iced (but not decorated) cake for Lesson 2, 3 and 4 as well as icing to practice with in class and decorate your cake with. You are not required to make practice cakes at home between your class dates but do know the more you practice the better it is.

If you have any more questions, ask away. Feel free to PM me if you want to. icon_smile.gif

TexasSugar is right. This what I tell my students to get. Also you will need cake boards. The 101 piece box has everything you will need for course 1. You will still have to buy the course 2 & 3 kits. But get what you can afford. The more you practice at home the better you will get. When I was taking my courses I would go home and practice some more .

OK, I just went and looked at my box. It is the 50 piece tool kit...and it says right on it that it has all the supplies needed for Wilton course 1. icon_redface.gif

TexasSugar... by additional tips do you mean doubles of what is in the box already, or in addition to what is in the box? I don't have #1 in by box...it starts at #2. I do have the rest. What are clown heads? By flower lifter do you mean the flower nail?

How many cake boards (and what size) should I get? Where is the best place to get them?

My grandmother decorated cakes for many years (took the courses). Her arthritis is too bad to do it now, so she's going to give me her stuff. So, I don't want to buy too much until I see what she has.

I'm so excited!!

By additional I mean doubles of what comes in the kit. I find having more than one 3, 16, and 104 is very helpful as you will use different colors of icing with those numbers. As far as tip 1, if you plan on going on to C2 I would go ahead and pick it up as you will use it in C2. It is also called for in C1 L2 and L3.

Flower lifters look kinda like small white scissors. I just looked it up in the yearbook and they don't come in the 50-piece box but tehy do see them individual in the store. Sorry, I was thinking of the 101 piece kit there. Here is a picture of them: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E30C8A3-475A-BAC0-5AC83426EF38A8BA&fid=785F0497-475A-BAC0-5A31EBA9D8CEFD54

Clown heads are plastic heads that are used in L3 for doing the clowns. If my students have no plans to do the clown cake I let them know they don't have to buy them, though I do think clowns look silly with no heads when we are practicing them in class. You can see them at: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E315543-475A-BAC0-5F9B540E643238F0&fid=53AE8807-475A-BAC0-5DB7C2AFED29F3C7

The size of cake boards will depend on the size of cake you make. I've had students use cake boards, have also had them use plates, and the bottom of the cake carrier.

I found that getting the turntable was helpful also. Don't dive in and buy too much stuff, especially if your grandmother is giving you her stuff. As far as investing in cake boards, make your own out of cardboard and cover them with foil or just use a plate. These are only practice cakes. Having duplicates on certain tips is a Godsend when you get started doing many cakes. You'll will discover which ones as you go along.

Don't know if you have a Hobby Lobby or not but keep an eye out for their 50% off sales on Wilton. Also they have 40% off one item sales all the time. Michaels also has 40% sales. That's the time to buy your big items.

Happy decorating!!!

See what your grandmother has before you go out and buy alot of stuff. AcMoore has a coupon every week and if you sign up for the email you can print up as many coupons as you want. That is a plus. That is how I got alot of my stuff, with buying it with the coupons. Usually Michaels and AcMoore take each other coupons too.

Can you sign up online for the coupon emails or is it in the store? I know some places will ask you when you check out if you want to sign up, but they never have....

For Hobby Lobby I print them off their website. Don't know about the other places.

I meant to add that I was refering to ACMoore. We don't have Hobby Lobby here, and Michael's is 45 min from me, in the opposite direction I usually go in.

Hope this helps.

Hi MrsMom!
I am taking the Wilton I course right now thru AC Moore & having lots of fun (so are my friends who get to eat the cakes!)
If you are looking for AC moore coupons, go to this site for the most recent ones:
http://www.acmoore.com/showweeklyspecialcoupon.asp?ID=98
If you are planning on buying duplicate tips, you may want to think about getting the course 1 kit, especially if you use the 40% off coupon. You will get some extra tips, bags, tip brush, spatula and the practice board too.
Have fun!
