Any ideas on how to make buttercream look like chrome? I know about luster dust..but the first time i tried it , it peeled the buttercream off....i just put luster and mixed w/ clear vanilla. I read in other forums to try everclear or vodka...but any other suggestions would be helpful. thanks!

well, if you want to try dusts again, to achieve crome silver mix 3 parts Nu Silver luster dust with 1 part Super Pearl Luster.

As for getting it to work, i always use vodka and have had no problems. But im sure someone will post with more info regarding that problem

I only use luster, petal dusts on fondant! I've never used it on buttercream! To me it doesn't make any sense to use it on buttercream because buttercream isn't a surface to paint on. IMO!!

If there is proof to the contrary then I would definately be interested in it and will give it a try!

i have not tried painting on bc, but do it alot on fondant. if you use bc, make sure it has crusted REALLY REALLY well and if you use alcohol instead it should work (so i hear). vanilla is pretty low in alcohol so it stays wet, which is probably why it smudged off. vodka is cheap ($2 a pint and is %80)and evaporates quicklyand so it works well. you could also try lemon, orange or mint extract (%85-%95 alcohol) . i use the same color combo above to get chrome.

CLEAR vanilla is imitation so VERY low in alcohol. you need a liquid that will evaporate fast so that your chance of the dust sticking is much better. again though, my opinion is that it would work better on fondant.

I paint on BC all the time with luster dust, pixie/disco dusts and color gels. It absolutely can be done and works just fine. thumbs_up.gif Just need to make sure you have a good quality artitst brush with soft bristles. I use a crusting BC, so I cannot answer to a non-crusting BC. I also mix everything with vodka.
