k...i have to make a fish cake this week. how do i do the scales? do I cut them out of the cake?

Roll out some fondant, cut tiny circles and overlap them to resemble scales.

or, be lazy, and just imprint them on the completed cake.
i did something like it for my dragon cake with the wide end of a piping ti, but i have seen it done on fish cakes with a fairly wide piping end.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Even just have of the tip can look really good.
