Painting On Buttercreme?

I am trying to do a "cheetah print" cake and I've found a few examples where people are painting the cheetah spots using gel color, onto fondant.

I was wondering if I could use this same method but paint onto buttercreme instead?

I've done it several times. Just use a light touch and it's best to let the buttercream crust.
