Can I throw my 2 cents in the ring and also ask a question?

I do the starburst and tootsie roll roses by microwaving a handful of the medium and rolling it out then cutting it with the Wilton time saving cutter and follow those directions, just as if I were working with MMF or gumpaste.

My question--I want to do the bubble gum ones and have bought the bubble gum tape shown in the pic. But how do I roll it out? Do you need to microwave it for a minute too?

How cool is that?? I had no idea that you could make flowers from gum and tootsie rolls and starbursts.

Another questions - related but not about roses...

Can you mold these candies into other objects and figures?

Newtodecorating -- from what the bubble gum rose decorations say you would use a pasta roller to roll it out into a large square.... My daughter loves the bubble tape and I'm not sure how to go about it but I'm sure if you were to pop it in the microwave for a few seconds and then ball it up and roll it out on the counter as you would with dough or something it should work as well icon_smile.gif Good luck.

I got these directions off this sight but I don't know who posted them. Whoever it was showed their roses next to the tootsie wrappers.

The midget size tootsie rolls.

Microwave tootsie roll 15 seconds.
Cut the tootsie roll in 1/2 lengthwise.
Cut each 1/2 into 5 pieces.
Roll one piece into a cone.
Pinch each piece between thumb and finger to make a circle the size of a dime.
Elongate one piece and wrap it around the cone for center.
Use 3 pieces to make the first round of petals.
Use the last 5 pieces to make the next round of petals.

I made my petal shapes more pointed at the base instead of completely round.
I also found the tootsie roll would warm enough between my fingers to be pliable.
I think there is a picture of my roses in my photos.
I used a starburst following the same directions.

Thanks to everyone who posted! I love the idea of making roses without piping. It will save my hands. Plus it gives some variety in flavor especially for kids.

Newtodecorating...you made wonder pets cupcakes? Could you please share how you did it, what you used. Do you have pics? My dd's love wonder pets!

I was making a beehive cake for my granddaughter (she's 3 today) and wanted to make some bumble bees to put on it. So, I thought I'd try Tootsie Rolls.

Here is my attempt at tootsie roll bumble bees. Thanks Newtodecorating for telling us about using Tootsie Rolls for something other than roses.

I used orange and chocolate and yellow and chocolate to make the bees. I kinda like the orange ones a bit better because there is more color. I suppose if I had used Starbursts for the yellow, it would have been brighter. Only issue with using 2 flavors molded together is that they melt/soften at different rates, so molding them can be a bit tricky.

Thanks for so many great ideas!!!!

I have a white cake with lots of starburt roses in my pic's if anyone wants to see--I covered them with luster dust and they turned out so nice.

M2C-I used a miniture candy coated heresey kiss as the rosebud--it helped alot and saved my starburst candy for the petals.

justfrosting - love your flowers!

Did you have trouble with them holding shape or sticking when you made the petals?

I had a bit of trouble with the bees sticking to the counter or plate as I was forming them. That is why you see them pictured on a piece of parchment. I also chilled the plate that was underneath them to help 'set' them up after shaping them.

The wings, being thin (guessing similar to rose petals) tended to droop and bend a bit. Anyone experience similar issues and how did you deal with it? Or was I working with the candies too warm

Actually I had no trouble at all. They were slightly warm when I molded the petals and formed the roses, maybe that helped them stick.

They were lots of fun to do.

Thanks, justfrosting. Maybe the tootsie rolls were a bit too warm. Possibly starbursts hold their shape better. I'll try starbursts next time and see.
