Dowels For A 2 Layer Cake?

I am a newbie and am wondering if I need to place dowels in a 2 layer (10" 8" or 6") cake for stability or is it pretty stable on its own?

Hi, I used dowels on a 2 tier cake just this past weekend. I think it will only add to it's stability and will give you the assurance that your lower tier cake won't dip in the middle from the weight of the top tier. Even a small cake can be heavy!

I would use 4 but I like to be extra safe. If it's a cake for home use, you might get away with 2 if you put the cake together shortly before it's served. If it's going to sit awhile, use 4 and you won't have to worry about it.

I would definitely dowel and I would add 4 dowels plus one in the center (just in case the board that your 8"/6" cake is on should happen to get moist and bend a little.

I use three. I make a triangle. I don't want any more holes in the cake than that. Speaking to a two tier only setup, of course.

For a 2 layer cake, no, you do not need dowels, but with 2 tiers, you definitely should.

I truly appreciate the wonderful, helpful tips! I will definitely dowel! Especially since I'm traveling with it and it's for my Godson and I wouldn't want anything to happen to it!

Agree. From your initial question, I'm not sure, but if it's just a two-layer cake, then no, you don't need dowels. (We've been making 2-layer cakes for years with no dowels in them.)

When you guys do a 2 layer cake do you put cake to cake or do you have something under the 2nd tier, like a cardboard circle or something?
