I am a newbie and am wondering if I need to place dowels in a 2 layer (10" 8" or 6") cake for stability or is it pretty stable on its own?
I truly appreciate the wonderful, helpful tips! I will definitely dowel! Especially since I'm traveling with it and it's for my Godson and I wouldn't want anything to happen to it!

For a 2 layer cake, no, you do not need dowels, but with 2 tiers, you definitely should.
Agree. From your initial question, I'm not sure, but if it's just a two-layer cake, then no, you don't need dowels. (We've been making 2-layer cakes for years with no dowels in them.)
When you guys do a 2 layer cake do you put cake to cake or do you have something under the 2nd tier, like a cardboard circle or something?
