Edible Alternative To Dowels

Does anyone have an edible alternative to dowels?

I saw rice krispie squares used on an episode of Cake Boss, but I'm not sure that's strong enough support.

I honestly wouldn't want to use anything edible as support, because anything edible would break down inside the cake due to the moisture in the cake/filling/icing and thus weaken the structure of the cake.
