I always had to watch my pin because it would work itself out. When I'd see it sticking out, I'd take the hammer to it and pound it back in. (drove hubby nuts! He said he'd never believe a hammer would be a daily kitchen tool! 
).
Are you trying to push the pin back in manually or using a hammer? It may be just a tight fit and if you're trying to just push the pin back in, you may not have the strength to do that with just your hands.
