Thanks for the support, guys!
The funny thing is, I grew up in a very strict, religious house. Sex Ed at my house was "don't do it". End of discussion. My parents are horrified by what I am doing now!
We have a Teen Parent Centre at my school for the pregnant teens and teen parents. It is a gorgeous building, excellent day care, etc. No one seems to see the irony of having a TPC, but not allowing birth control.
I do teach abstinence, but I teach it as an option, not the only answer. It's pretty hard to teach abstinence to kids who already HAVE babies!

" Imagine if we were all sent home from our workplaces with a required hour of extra work every night!"

If that ever happened I would know I got fired from my teaching job! I spend a minimum of 3 hours every single day after my "work hours" are done and at least one and a half hours before school begins. But I do love my job.

Homework for little kids is given for the following reasons:
to teach children learning takes place outside the school building
to have the children practice skills that they need a lot of
repitition in order to memorize
to teach the children to be responsible to bring home an activity
complete it and return it
to involve the parent in their child's learning

Love it or hate it-there are not enough hours in the school year for students to learn all they need to know without extra work beyond the school day. Personally, I would love it if we extended the school day and went to school year round and skipped the homework.

School has been in for us since Aug 28. My son is in first grade and has had 3 math homework work sheets and got a spelling word list yesterday. He had homework once a week in kindergarten. I personally don't mind the homework. We get homework out of the way as soon as he gets home. Then he has time for other things.

I see both sides so I won't add my two cents.

But, can we talk about the fund raisers??? Good grief do they get ridiculous. I feel as though they are pimping my children...seriously. I mean they even punish the children for not selling by not allowing them to participate in special parties. They hype their heads up with dreams of xbox360s and IPods.

I'd rather donate $10 then have to sell $50 worth of overpriced garbage to people who can't afford it. Then feel as though I have to buy overpriced garbage from their kids in return. Vicious cycle...not doing it.

I hate most fund raisers with a passion. Our school doesn't often give permission for the teachers to fund raise but my son had to one year. I spent more money driving around just to sell the crap than it would have cost to just pay for the circus, it was a couple years ago when gas was so high. Then I had to drive around again to deliver stuff. icon_mad.gif

Last year the kindergarten teachers got smart and did a bake sale durin conferences when the staff had to stay late and there were hundreds of parents going through the school. icon_twisted.gif They sold almot everything individually so people could get a snack. They also had someone selling Indian tacos to raise money for an employee of the school who was sick.

I don't mind bake sales or coupons for local stores, things people might acutally want or use.

We already got our first fundraising packet this year. I threw it out and told my daughter to tell them that she's not a salesman, if they ask why we didn't participate. I had a bad experience with the fundraiser they did last year and just don't care to do it again this year. Besides, they're selling frozen cakes. That's going to go over really well with the people I know icon_razz.gif

My parents strictly refused to allow my brother and I to do any kind of fund raising that involved us selling anything when we were in school, and I applaud them for it.
When I have kids there is no way they will be doing that kind of fund raising.

Our schools do bingo and casino nights to raise money (and it's A LOT of money). Parents volunteer to work a night in some stinky, dark, depressing hell-hole counting money, being a runner etc and the school gets paid a portion of that night's takings. The kids are not involved at all.

I flat out refuse. Gambling is the cause of plenty of misery in the world (one good friend almost lost everything due to a gambling addiction) and I will not be part of it so my kids can have a couple of hotdog lunches or a new Smartboard. I suggest the school might as well dress up a few of the more attractive mothers and put them out on the streets for the night and see how much they can bring in... icon_wink.gif

That made me giggle envisioning some of the "supermoms" out there trying to show one another up with the most money brought in, lmao.
