Jamie, so do I understand that they basically come in to eat cake, look at pics, leave in 20 minutes and then if they are interested they come back for a 2nd appt?
Actually, they usually hang for longer than that. I know a lot of people probably wouldn't have patience for that, but where I am, I don't really have any competition except for the local bakery, which does all their designs out of a book, and no fondant. So, if they want something fancy, they know they have to come to me.
So, one one hand, yeah, it causes a need for a second appointment, OR, in most cases, the work proceeds online, and we don't meet again. I like that I have a no hassle tasting, I kind of refer to it as "no pressure, just fun and cake!" And that's pretty much what it is.
Yeah, I have yet to do a tasting, and come up with a design and contract out of thin air all on one afternoon. It always starts with email ideas, then a tasting, then a contract. And like I said, usually no meeting after that, just pics and my sketches, and and an emailed contract, and a check in the mail. ![]()
La Bella, I haven't had anyone seriously late yet, and the couple of times they showed up a few minutes late, just showed them a seat and we continued on! I have more patience than I let on....lol. Especially if I am courting the person for possible 600 or $900 wedding cake.
And, yes me again, I can't stop typing, lol!
So, do I have a stopping point with people? Heck yeah man, I rarely answer my phone, I have a message that says I can be reached via email much quicker. I will call them back and ask a general question, and then it goes from there pretty much via email. The gift box cake? All email, no tasting, no meeting, met the girl face to face at delivery time. Smooth as butter, that gig was.
Another thing I've recently learned, I am so much faster at putting together a cake than even a couple of months ago. I figure I can handle a little PITA-ishness, if I get a good paycheck for work that is becoming easier and easier as I hone my craft.
I know! I had a bride that had brought her bridesmaids with her and one of them said that she actually did that. I asked her if she was getting married. She said that she hadnt been asked but she goes to bridal shows and cake tastings and doesnt even have a date! I just cant imagine deceiving someone just to get cake or free stuff. I think your right Debi, its either the culteral, upbringing or something. I would of never of dreamed of doing something like that!
You know, I may know this person. I used to work with a girl when I was teaching in VA and she'd go to all the bridal shows and she didn't even have a boyfriend. I asked her what the heck was the point & she said she liked the cake & food samples and for whatever the cost of the event was, she could get a lot of food & depending on who was holding the event, sometimes there was champagne and wine there too. She would also give fake names, addresses and phone numbers as well and she would look up the list of the vendors before and if too many were duplicates of a previous recent show, she'd skip it because she figured they'd remember her.
She moved to MD about 9 years ago. Wonder if it's her. If her name is Melinda, it very well may be.
Lol Terri! There is a new hotel in town, that is having a bridal open house later this month, and they are charging $12 entry! They get lunch, a fashion show and chance to win a honeymoonpackage (whatever that is, still need to get an asnwer on that), and I was wondering if it was going to cut down on the freebie seekers. Not so sure, maybe not since they'll be getting lunch! ![]()
Oh well.
does Monkeybutt come with greasy, grimey gopher gut filling?
indydebi -- you are a priceless one of a kind! gotta luv her!
LMBO! I have tears in my eyes, laughing, crying!
This is WHY I love all you guys SO MUCH! Who needs antidepressants with this site? ![]()

This is just so grotesquely tacky.
Ok, which one of you sassy sues made up a fake email address and sent me a silly 50 million question email about a simple cake this afternoon, huh?? Which one of you?
It wasn't me, but I'll keep that in mind for the future! ![]()

What!? Oh, man! You caught me! LOL!
That's cute Jamie, real cute!
I just got one, too! Someone's emailing me asking all kinds of questions, and it sounds more like an info-troll than a client...
I just sent her to my website and told her to read it, ha ha ha!

Does anyone else ever google email addresses when you get a request from someone? I always do, just for the heck of it. Sometimes they never pop up. Makes me wonder. Not always a sign of a troll, but makes me wonder sometimes. Or their name. Not even their name popping up. That is a little more concerning. ![]()
Now I have a PITA that called last week on Wednesday asking for a cake for a bridal shower on the 16th. Told her I was booked solid and she begged me to do it so I talked it over with her and she said she would send me a check immediately....well, by yesterday it hadn't come so I called and got her voice mail so left message and told her I had talked to another client that wanted a cake that day also but said I would wait to book them to see if her check came by Monday. Told her if I didn't have the check by midnight, (last night), I would have to take the other order. She called back and got my voicemail (grrrr I hate it when I miss one of these calls) and she said "yes I want the cake and I mailed the check today - I hope that's ok"....well, if you listened to my last call, you'd know it isn't ok and if I don't have a check by midnight I'm booking the other cake. So I call her back again....of course got her voicemail and told her this. Haven't heard a thing from her and I expect I'll get her check tomorrow or the next day....and then I'll call her and tell her I have her check and either come get it or have me rip it up or whatever ....and no I'm not mailing it back to her. She lives about 4 miles away from me! Arrggghhh this people!!!!!

Don't worry, you won't get her check! I'm sure it was mailed just as promptly as the first one was! ![]()
