There's a recipe here entitled 'Darn Good Chocolate Cake' under cake mix recipes, and that is a *very* solid and firm cake once it's all done. I would think you could adjust the ingredients needed so that you could do any flavor of mix cake if you don't like chocolate.
I made that recipe for my son's birthday cake, and it was SO incredibly dense and firm. It cut beautifully, and lifted off the cake board beautifully as well.
