yes but at the very least, the polite thing would be to give credit to the original design. A statement like "inspired by XXXX's cake". Some designs are so popular it's hard to tell from whom they originated so just acknowledge the person who's design you're actually copying. Or private message the cc member and ask if you can copy - also a good way to ask for tips. Most members are flattered by these requests.
