How Do I Attach Satin Ribbon To A Fondant Covered Cake?

I have my first wedding cake order and am wondering how I attach satin ribbon to the bottom of each layered cake. I have heard of people using royal icing ... is this true? And one other question, does grease soak through the ribbon when applying to fondant? I am guessing not, but am not sure. Thanks for your help!!
