I meant the actual cakes appear shorter than nowadays - like only 3 inches tall or so. Also, I hope I didn't offend anyone's age or anything. I certainly am not young and I was a teenager in the late 80's so I remember that decade with some fondness.

Oh that's just because I didnt' know about proper leveling, how to bake so they'd rise right, and using wilton pans (which I think are just not quite as tall as they should be!). Remember, this was WAY before food channel, cable and the internet! Hell, I didn't even know what a styrofoam cake was back then! icon_lol.gif

I use wilton pans and my cakes are always at least 4" tall. haha. They are kinda shallow though compared to other brands.

Just wondering, was it unusual to be an independent cake decorator at that time? Did people just buy from grocery stores and bakeries? If you were on your own and without ALL the resources we have now....I don't know how you did it!

I cut out the engagements in the paper and MAILED them a letter of introduction. People talk about "waiting" to hear back from brides today ... back then we had to wait on mail delivery before they even called us! It wasn't unusual to be one ... there were probably fewer of us that did it for money because there wasn't food network, etal, to advertise cake decorating. Ergo, less competition.

I handed out cards everywhere I went. I created my own "brochures" (such as they were) on a typewriter!!! Used rub-off letters at the biz supply store. Lots of trips to the print shop. VERY manual all the way!
