I haven't taken it but I was trained in it at the WMI teacher meeting last year. You'll learn gumpaste calla lilies, carnations and a fantasy flower. It focuses almost exclusively on more advanced techniques (they're phasing out the current gumpaste book with green cutters because they feel it's outdated.) Another thing is the way they do the flowers themselves -- the old way is to wrap everything, the new way is quite different. I personally like their carnations. But as always, be aware that many of the things you will learn will be dependent on how much stuff in addition to the course they make you buy...
If you like Wilton classes and working with gumpaste you'll enjoy it.
Thank you!!
Just curious if the drapes and swags were touched on at all?
I love working with fondant and think I can do it (swags; drapes). I've read the tutorial here over and over. I also enjoy making gumpaste flowers. Looked at all the photos and books as possible for that, plus what was in course 3.
There was some drape and swag information given but not a lot. You're probably going to find more information online about that, and of course we're always here to help you! ![]()
No one has taken the class yet, as it scheduled to start at Michaels in Febuary. If you don't have a Michaels in your area, don't frete, Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's are scheduled to start teaching in it May, I believe.
I've got the lesson book here with me, so let me give you a quick overlay of the class.

Tinting and marbleizing fondant
Covering a cake board with fondant. Also using the new spiral rolling pin to add texture to it.
Covering a round cake with fondant
Lesson 2:
Making gum glue
Draping using fondant/gumpaste blend
Handkerchief- style overlay
Ribbon Garland and Border
Carnation Base (gumpaste)
Lesson 3:

Carnation Leaf
Gumpaste Fantasy Flower
Leaf
Lesson 4:
Fondant Favor Box
Demo of using fondant cut-outs (cut out, overlays and inlays)

Final Cake
For the final cake there are 4 choices in the back of the book. One has the fantasy flower and draping, one has ribbon garland and dasies, one is the handkerchief with the fondant favor box and the final as a overlay of fondant with with hearts.
Some of it will be a little bit of repeat to the C3. Covering a cake with fondant, though these are round cakes instead of squares, is one of them. But the new course does introduce some new techinues like the gumpaste flowers. It also shows you several neat ideas for the Fondant Decorative Punch Set and the Fondant Ribbon Cutter/Embosser.
The course at Michaels will be $30 (as all Michaels classes have gone up $5.) The monthly promotion for Feb is 1/2 off so it would be $15. March is buy the kit ($29.99 can use a coupon on it) get the class free. And April will be 40% off making the class $18.
The calla lily was shown at the WMI AIM meeting but it is not included in the new course.
Hope this helps you. ![]()

Man! I am so excited!! I know how some of you feel about wilton courses, but they're the only ones that I can afford, and I feel that you learn enough of the basics!
I'm finding it interesting that they're starting the offer in Canada the same time that they're offering it in the US. Canada usually lags behind somewhat so I'm excited.
Yes, I understand that they're phasing out the green gumpaste cutters and book, it is a little.....outdated?
Counting down the days!!!
I'm so glad I saw this post. I've been contemplating going out and buying that green cutter kit. I'll have to check out our local Michael's to see if they're offering it too. Thanks for the info!!! ![]()
