After Putting The Sanding Sugar On ???

I've put the sanding sugar on Minnie's ears and they look great. My question is that I want to make sure the sugar stays on the ears doesn't end up on the cake part of her hat. Does that make sense?

I guess all you can do is shake it off really good before you put the ears on...
