Im trying to make a topsy turvy cake the ones that you use the styrofoam lifts on them I have been googling and loooking at pictures and a tutorial

It sais you use are suppose to use a cakeboard with each tier obviously but it states in the instructions that I read that you insert dowels like you would with any other tiered cake but and also one long dowel that goes thru the whole thing,

how do you make it to make sure that you perforate the cakeboards and not damage the cakes, it sais to sharpen the dowel but will you still be able to put it thrue the styrofoam lift ?
Im just afraid I press down too hard and mess up my cakes.

Also what can i put between the styro lift and cake board to assure my cake wont slide right off , specially being that it will be tilted due to the lift. and also being that the styrofoam will be coverd in plastic wrap I want something thats gonna stick.

Please any help will be appreciated
