She lives about 5 hours from me. I found out while I was mowing that we would be able to make the trip.
I am going to try and get this(or a close facsimile of it)done before we have to leave in the morning. As I type, not even the oven is preheating...sooooooooooo....as soon as I hit 'submit', I'll begin timing myself. I will take photos along the way to document my progress...possibly one or so on the hour(or as close to it as I can get).
Wish me luck?
Good Luck!! This is fun - somoeone should do this every week!

Mama told me to decide what kind of cake because no one knew what kind she liked....aaaaaaaaaaargh. I couldn't decide on anything far out so I went with a buttermilk cake.
I didn't get much accomplished in the first hour.
I looked through recipes as the oven preheated and the butter softened a bit(had to finish softening it in the nuker)
mixed the batter( I doubled it just in case I mess up0
washed my dishes and the counters
I'm going now to make the icing....she ain't gettin' any fillin' other than icing!
Unless it's lemon/lime swirled 'mousse' which I made two days ago...I'll have to see how I feel by then.
I have to resize photos to include them...
I agree with Edna, can't wait to see the finished product also!
Love the pics so far....made me giggle...
Okay, I've got a good bucket of icing.
Which produced a MESS!
Got that cleaned up.
Second layer is done...(I made 2(2nd one kinda skimpy but definitely usable should I need it))
Thought I might use cookie, iced and covered for the top back and the door...maybe(it was a test batch...I can't find which recipe I used so I was going back through them to find it)
rolled out cookie dough while pans and bowls were in oven drying ![]()
All my dishes are done and counters cleaned...AGAIN!
Buttermilk cake, to me, is a yellow cake made with buttermilk instead of another liquid.
First off, Happy Mother's Day!
Can't wait to see how it turns out. This is nail-biting, edge of the seat excitement for me.
Ain't it a bit sad how I get this way over cake???? ![]()
You're doing great!! This is so much fun, thanks for sharing you challenge with us.
I want two mixers!!! I always wanted another bowl, I never thought about getting a whole mixer! I feel like such a nitwit! Is it too late to ask for another KA mixer for Mother's Day?
Melissa
haha this is great, good luck, I've been watching your progress over the last hour or two. I'm glad I found a place with people that do crazy things like me lol.
Can't wait to see the finished cake.
Cookie got baked(see the finger imprint? um...something told me after I did it that I shouldn't have tested it for doneness that way) and, I'm thinkin'...this ain't the recipe...it spread quite a bit!
Split, filled, cut to approx 6"(actually 5 7/
, and stacked.
doweled halfway up and added a board
crumb coated
now, I will allow it to settle while I cover the board
and begin making the doodads
after a few hours, I will stick it into the freezer to firm up then trim it...crumbcoat again and cover it in fondant...it's a very tender cake...
I appreciate all that are tuning in to cheer me on! My sister is gonna cry with joy if it turns out! She'll cry from laughing if it doesn't...either way, she's gonna cry!
I have 3 KAs and would love it if I could get one 20qt Hobart!
It's never too late to ask for one! It may be too late to get one for Mother's Day though ![]()
Happy Mother's Day!
thank you for sharing. I'm having so much fun waiting for you updates and pics. I can't stop giggling with excitement.
all4cake thanks for sharing this challenge with us. So much fun to watch. I am with you--I'd love to get a Hobart. Since I can't afford that I saved my pennies and I was able to get my first stand mixer this week--a 7 cuisinart. I've been making baking and frosting cake and cupcakes for the last two days.
Keep up the amazing work!!!! I can't wait to see the next pix.
Oh and when you have a chance--how do you get your frosting so smooth?
Just logged on a few minutes ago and found this thread. Sounds like an all nighter to me. I am sitting here drinking some spumante and relaxing. Babysat one of my granddaughters tonight and I have a grandson that I have custody of too. Hubby grilled steaks and I made the fixins. In between made a cookies and cream cake and going to make it a cookies and cream ice cream cake for my own Mother's Day. I will assemble it together in the morning. Can't wait to see more posts on this one.
