yes, you can pipe it white and paint it with gold luster dust mixed with alcohol.

How woud i do this if i want to do fine detail - i am a newbie at royal icing. Won't it make a mess on the cake when i'm dusting?

I am suggesting you make it like a paint and use a small paintbrush. (rather than a dust)
