Gumpaste - Storage And How Long?

I want to make up a batch of gum paste and was wondering what the best way to store it was and how long you can store it? Also, I am going to make some kind of princess cake for my twins' bday this summer and was thinking about thing to put on it. If I make them ahead of time and let them dry hard...how long will things keep like that (I'm guessing they won't be eaten anyway, so I figured quite awhile?)
After you make your gumpaste, rub some shortening over the ball, wrap in plastic wrap and then place in an airtight container or zipper bag. It will last for a couple of weeks before getting too dry. Any excess can be frozen.
Finished gumpaste pieces can be stored for a very long time if they are kept out of direct sunlight and away from humidity. So making your pieces for your twins' cake now will not be a problem.
Don't forget to post your pics!

Thanks for the tips...if they are in direct sunlight, will they fade?
