i would like to start thinking about opening my own cake business. this is what i have always wanted to do but i have no idea where to start. someone please give me a clue

laurabeth, welcome to CC, the GREATEST cake-resource site you'll ever come across.
Start in the Business Forum. There are hundreds (not kidding) of threads on starting a business. You'll glean a ton of good info from the threads in there.
Basically, your first step is to write a business plan. Your local SBA office can offer help and classes on how to do that. The Business Plan is the blueprint for every decision you'll make along the way.
