I was wondering if anyone knows how to do the sculpted cakes with the pvc pipe?

seems to me that when i see people using the pvc pipe they are using RKT or modeling chocolate to sculpt rather than cake

The odd time I have seen cake being used with the PVC pipe it seems that it is only a center post so the pipe is put into the stacked layers and then just lightly carved. The other parts like arms, legs seem to be all made out of RKT or chocolate.
