Box Tops On Gift Box Cakes, Whats The Best Way To Do Them?

Hello all,
I have to do a tiered cake of gift boxes and want to make the box tops look realistic. There will be square and round boxes. Whats the best way to do this ??? of course it will all be in fondant.

For the square ones, you cover the whole cake first and then glue strip of fondant around the top of the cake, with the same colour or a different colour, to look like the lid.
