I think the best part about making an awesome cake is watching the recipient enjoy it! Especially if it's kids - they really love the cool parts, but they enjoy the heck out of eating it also! I like the fact that my cakes taste great, and I while I LOVE making them look cool, IMO taste comes first! I think the best compliments I get are that not only are the cakes beautiful, they taste great!
ALthough I am a little overprotective until the cake is actually out for viewing...I did a cake for a friend last week and the people at the party place tried to take the cake out of the fridge - the box was stuck to the shelf, and the cake shifted a bit...AFTER I told her I would take the cake out myself when they were ready...I was annoyed b/c the birthday girl hadn't even SEEN it yet! ugh! Oh well....In the end, it IS just cake!!!
7yyrt: I, too, love to see an empty cake board! ![]()
"I didn't spend all that time on the cake so you morons could stand there and LOOK at it! That's what dummy cakes are for! So either start cutting that bad boy, or hand me the knife and get the heck outta my way!"
I'm more complimented by the taste-reviews than I am by the looks-reviews anyway.
I swear I'm thinking that exact thing when I bring a cake to work and they tell me it's too pretty to cut.
I usually end up saying something more like, "I didn't bring it to sit here and look pretty. I want ya'll to enjoy it!!!!!" ![]()
As I would be making them, I would think..."oh, no way could I bring myself to watch this one being cut". I thought this way with the first few cakes. But everytime it came time to cut, I'd be the first one there, making sure they had the proper sharp, pointed knife and wait for the birthday person to make the first cut, then I would do the rest. After about 5 decorated cakes, I no longer wondered "how can I cut it".
Like a PP, I do sometimes just sit and admire my work after I'm done and definitely take lots and lots of pictures. I also try to save a little something from each cake I make, so I have a bow from one cake, a flower from another, a figure from that one, lettering from this one etc.

OH YEA! I'm glad they love the design....but PAALEEESE Tell me how great it tastes too...I'm really waiting for that. Non chalantly of course... ![]()
Personally I want the cake to taste as good as it looks. I consider the cake as edible art. It is double pleasure. Great to look at and delicious to eat. I get such a good feeling when people enjoy my creations because I am my worst critic. Like someone said before, just take a picture of the cake. Then grab a knife cut into that bad boy and enjoy
,k
I love making cakes and seeing the joyful expressions on the faces of the celebrants but I feel sad when its time to cut the cake and wonder at times if its worth the effort and sleepless nights it usually takes to create artistic cakes when within a few hours ,even minutes the cake is demolished
It's ment to be eaten! That is the ultimate goal! Yummy yummy in my tummy! I take great pleasure in the artistry, but it better taste good cus I'm gonna eat it!! ![]()
This is the reason I like to decorate my cakes with fun things to eat. I like using cookies, meringues, chocolates, and pretzels on my cakes. Everyone can hardly wait to start picking my cakes apart and eating all of the decorations....then cutting into the cake.
For me personally, it is the fun of doing the decorating that I enjoy. Once a cake is finished I am ready to move on to the next idea. If they don't cut the cake...I am not released of that idea to start planning the next one.
i recently did a naughty cake for my sister in law, the party started at 5, it was a suprise. and she made EVERYONE wait till 12, so it would actually be her birthday because she couldnt cut such an amazing cake. by 12pm, most people had left and ther remainders (including me) ha were drunk!!! she cut a tiny weeeeeeny line, then handed me the knife. . and i was like that was it?? ive waited 12 hours for this (i finished it in the morning ) omg!! lol!
but i tell you, nothing is better than hearing 'oh my, that is absolutley beautiful, the best cake ive ever had ' etc etc. Its part of the 'craving' for me. Its not just the ooohs and aahs of how it looks!
We are our own worst critics and having some feedback not only about how the cake looks but how it tastes is great. I have always received great feedback about how moist my cakes are and I strive to keep that up.
I to always get the " it is to pretty to cut, I'll let you destroy the cake". I wish the adults would think more like the kids. "I want that flower, shell.... and a big slice of cake please"

Yep, I want to know they loved the taste!
Do you know Judge Judy ruled on a wedding cake case btw a disgruntled bride and a cake decorator? The cake photo she gave the cake lady to copy was that of a 3 tiered cake using champagne flutes for pillars. The cake lady told her to supply the champagne flute to her. The bride brought her MARGARITA GLASSES!...LOL! So the cake lady did her best, but the cake lady obviously was very novice and didn't put any sort of plate under the inverted glasses so the weight of the other tiers caused the glasses to sink into the bottom and center tiers. The cake was definitely a cake wreck. Judge Judy asked the bride if she and her guests ate the cake, the bride said "Yes, the cake tasted wonderful, I have no issues with the taste, the look of the cake was not what I ordered and it ruined my wedding"
Judge Judy ruled for the cake lady because to her, a cake is to be consumed, and since it was consumed and the bride had no issues with the taste and all her guests were served then the cake lady didn't owe her a dime in retribution...Judge Judy also said something along the lines of "Let this be a lesson to you to check credentials of your wedding vendors prior to purchase".
So TASTE is super important! TAKE THAT PICTURE AND CUT THAT CAKE... ![]()
