Making Cartoon Characters Out Of Fondant

Just curious if anyone knows how to make cartoon characters out of fondant for a cupcake topper? Do you copy a pic and then cut out each of the features and then cut from fondant? I see this all over and am so stumped. if anyone can tell me I would really appreciate it!!
theres a lot of tutorials on people, so i imagine there are some on various characters, then its a case of modifying it for your needs. have a look on youtube.
or if it is a flat character, which it actually sound likes your doing, then yes, cutting out shaes is the way to go. and either way, its best to have te characters infront of you.
