My nephew is really into the Civil War and I am making his cake for Sunday. It's just a small cake (half of a 9x13). I'm also making another cake for my niece.

There are a couple of revolvers and a civil war hat that I'd like to make and I'd rather not make lots of different colors of gumpaste. Can I make the hat and guns out of white gumpaste and then just paint it? If I'm painting it can I just use a mixture of vodka and gel colors? If I wanted to add dusting powder would I just add while the colors are wet or would I mix those with the vodka also?

Thanks!
Amy

You can paint it with the vodka and gel. If you want to dust it with powder I would add it after your "paint" is dry and use it dry. you could mix it all together depending on the effect you want but I wouldn't add wet powder to anything already painted or it will take off what you already did.
