I had a disaster last night in creating a mad hatter shaped caked. I used a 6 inch round cake (3" thick) on the bottom and and 8" on top. but I had a hard time carving the cake. It seemed as though I was cutting most of the cake off just to accomplish this shape.
If anyone can provide me with the right steps to take in making getting this cake effect, I would greatly appreciate it.

There's an article here on cc in that section that has a tutorial. Hopes that helps.
I'm new to cake baking and decorating but I just used a template that you can search for on here and it worked great. I think there are two separate ones. I used that one that doesn't require carving but there is another one too that looks pretty easy to follow. Go to forums and do a search.
Good Luck!!!
Lindy Smith's book - Cakes to Inspire and Desire - has excellent instructions for making a mad hatter cake.
All the best,
Cris.
